How to Do Google Site Verification? Step by Step Guide

If you haven’t verified your domain to use Google apps yet, then this article is for you! In this guide, we will show you how to do Google site verification. To do this, two Google site verification methods can be used: via TXT record and via HTML file.

Why Should You Do Google Site Verification?

A domain name is one of the most important elements of your website. Just like your home address, a domain name allows web browsers to direct visitors to your site. For this reason, all domains must be different.

Related to this issue, Google Apps also require verification to know that you are the sole and true owner of your domain name. With Google site verification, you can use Google’s services such as G Suite, Drive Enterprise, and Cloud Identity.

2 Methods for Google Site Verification

You can make your Google Apps domain name by adding a TXT record to your Domain Name Server (DNS) records or uploading the HTML verification file to your site. You are free to browse through both methods and choose the one that suits you better.

1. Domain Verification with TXT Record

This method works if your web hosting service has a DNS Domain Editor. If you are using Hostinger’s web hosting service, you can find the DNS Domain Editor in the Advanced section of your hPanel.

Domain Verification with TXT Record

Here’s Google site verification with a TXT record:

1. Go to DNS Zone Editor from your hosting account.
2. Find the TXT (Text) section and click Add New.
3. You will need to enter some information in the assigned space. Below you can find an explanation of which information you need to enter in which part. Click Create after you’re done.

  • Host – most of the time you can fill this field with a tail (@) or leave it blank.
  • TXT value – this field needs the security number of your Google Apps domain, i.e. the number starting with google-site-verification 68 characters long. You can find your security number in the Google Apps Admin console.
  • TTL – Time to Live, this field allows you to specify how fast the new system will forward the DNS record to the world. The default duration of TTL is 14400 seconds (4 hours).

4.That’s it! If the transaction is successful, the new TXT record will also appear in the TXT section. Google Apps domain changes usually take two to three hours to take effect.

2. Verifying Your Domain Name By Uploading an HTML File Through File Manager

If you are a web owner and only have access to an FTP or File Manager, you may want to use this method. In Hostinger, you can find the File Manager in the Files section of your hPanel.

Here’s how to upload HTML file with File Manager to verify your Google Apps domain:

If you are a web owner and only have access to an FTP or File Manager, you may want to use this method. In Hostinger, you can find the File Manager in the Files section of your hPanel.

Here’s how to upload HTML file with File Manager to verify your Google Apps domain:

  • Switch to File Manager from your hosting account.
  • Open the public_html directory and find your .htaccess file.
  • Change the name of the .htaccess file to .eskihtaccess by right-clicking on it and clicking Rename.
  • Go back to public_html directory and press Upload File

Verifying Your Domain Name By Uploading an HTML File Through File Manager

  • Upload your HTML validation file to the public_html directory. You can download this file from the Google Apps Admin console.
  • After you upload your HTML validation file, enter the directory path – yourdomain.com/htmlfilename.html to open the file in a web browser. If you have uploaded the file correctly, you should see google-site-verification with the code in the HTML filename.
  • Return to your Google Apps Admin console and continue the verification process by clicking the Verify button. The verification process can take up to an hour.
  • Make sure to rename the .eskihtaccess file back to .htaccess after verifying your domain name.

Conclusion

Before you start using Google’s services, you should verify your Google site. There are two ways to do this:

  • Adding a TXT record to your domain’s DNS records.
  • Upload the HTML validation file to your website.
