What is a lithium battery?

Lithium has revolutionised the world of technologies by occupying a place of reference in the world of battery manufacturing. Having become a key element in the manufacture of latest-generation machines, lithium-ion batteries offer a high-power energy source capable of meeting the energy needs of industry and households. What is it about ? What is its mode of operation? What are the advantages ? Focus on the lithium-ion battery!

Lithium battery: what is it?

The lithium battery is above all an electrochemical accumulator which, in order to function, uses the chemical element Lithium in the form of ions. There are 3 kinds:

  • Lithium metal;
  • Lithium-ion and;
  • Polymer lithium.

The first accumulator is less used on the market because of the high degree of insecurity it poses. The last one is an improved version of the 2nd offering more security, but distributing less energy compared to this one. Unlike the two, the lithium battery manufacturer has designed the lithium-ion battery following a well-defined operating principle.

Lithium battery: how does it work?

The principle of operation of lithium-ion batteries is very simple. They are made with two electrodes (negative and positive) which are immersed in an electrolyte, a solution that conducts ions. The precept then consists of reversibly circulating the Lithium ions from the cathode (metal oxide pole) to the anode (graphite pole).

During its operation, the electrons stored at the level of the anode are released to reach the cathode: this is the discharge. Conversely, as soon as the battery is charged, it produces electricity which forces the return of electrons from the cathode to the anode. The technology then draws its source from the Lithium ions (Li+) which compose it and which give it all its high power.

Lithium batteries: in which areas are they found?

Lithium batteries have invaded the largest sectors of new technologies. A manufacturer of lithium batteries supplies its products to designers of cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, and any other transportable miniature device, but not only. The lithium-ion battery is also present in high-energy sectors such as electric and hybrid cars, the world of aeronautics, etc.

This renewed interest can be explained by several factors, of which battery life is an important point. Indeed, unlike conventional batteries, lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan ranging from 5 to 20 years, which will appeal to engineers and builders of latest generation machines.

Li-ion battery: what are its advantages?

If it has become the only source that powers most electric motors, it is because the Li-ion battery has more advantages than any other battery.

The first advantage of lithium is that it is a technology that offers high energy density for a low weight and an almost non-existent volume. In other words, with such miniaturized technology, it is possible to store a large amount of electricity, and all this without the motor weighing a ton. The lithium battery manufacturer has designed its technology compact and lightweight; two advantages that other batteries do not offer simultaneously.

Unlike batteries and cells made with nickel, the lithium-ion battery is not affected by the famous memory effect. In addition, its self-discharge capacity is very low, which allows it to offer a long life to the devices. Finally, it is a technology that requires little maintenance, except for storage requirements.

Why opt for lithium-ion batteries made in France?

Li-ion batteries manufactured on French soil are ultra-light and high-performance technologies designed in compliance with the standards in force. They have received international ISO 9001 certification, which symbolizes respect for the principles and rules of management. It is a battery manufactured to seduce and satisfy customer requirements. It guarantees optimal security; main expectation of customers who are looking for the cutting edge in innovative technologies.

In the lithium accumulators is integrated a system able to protect the circuit. This prevents the motor from taking on an excessive load, overheating or over-discharging. It is a system that guarantees protection and safety to the Li-ion battery.
